THIOGUARD TST (Total System Treatment) is a non-hazardous, non-pharmaceutical technical grade alkaline slurry for use in the treatment of municipal water and wastewater.

THIOGUARD grade magnesium hydroxide is most recognized as “milk of magnesia,” a safe treatment for acid stomach. THIOGUARD will safely reduce odors, remove grease, prevent SSO’s, and prolong the useful life of the sewers and the treatment plant while improving the quality of the treated wastewater. There is no other chemical or biological alternative that safely and economically offers such wide ranging benefits:

  • HMIS (Hazardous Materials Identification System) is a numerical hazard rating that incorporates the use of labels with color-coded bars as well as training materials. It was developed by the National Paint & Coatings Association (NPCA) as a compliance aid for the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard.
    • Health: 0 - Minimal
    • Flammability: 0 - Minimal
    • Reactivity Hazard: 0 - Minimal
    • Personal Protection: B - Glasses, Gloves

  • NFPA is a standard maintained by the U.S. based National Fire Protection Association. It defines the colloquial "fire diamond" used by emergency personnel to quickly and easily identify the risks posed by nearby hazardous materials. This is necessary to help determine what, if any, special equipment should be used, procedures followed, or precautions taken during the first moments of an emergency response. The four divisions are typically color-coded, with blue indicating level of health hazard, red indicating flammability, yellow (chemical) reactivity, and white containing special codes for unique hazards. Each of health, flammability and reactivity is rated on a scale from 0 (no hazard; normal substance) to 4 (severe risk).
    • NFPA code: Flammability: 0 , Health: 0 ,
      Reactivity: 0 , Special: 0.
    • Flash point: Not Combustible
    • Unusual Fire Hazard / Extinguishing Media: None
    • Hazardous Decomposition Products: None
    • Firefighting Instructions: Firefighters should wear NIOSH-approved, positive pressure, self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing when appropriate.

  • Risk Managment
    • According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration hazardous materials (HM) truck incidents cost society nearly $1.2 billion every year. On average there are 15,000 HM truck incidents annually.
    • Today municipal wastewater treatment plant and collection systems are regularly treated with hazardous chemicals for odor and corrosion control as biological plant processes:

    POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE - KMnO4
    Hazardous - Yes
    Danger! Strong oxidizer.
Contact with other material may cause fire. Corrosive. Causes burns to any area of contact. Harmful if swallowed or inhaled.

    HYDROGEN PEROXIDE - H2O Hazardous
    Hazardous - Yes
Danger! Strong oxidizer. Contact with other material may cause a fire. Harmful if inhaled. Corrosive. Causes eye and skin burns. May cause severe respiratory tract irritation with possible burns. May cause severe digestive tract irritation with possible burns.

    FERRIC CHLORIDE – FeCl3 Hazardous
    Hazardous - Yes
Danger! Corrosive. Causes burns to any area of contact. Harmful if swallowed or inhaled. Affects the liver.

    FERROUS CHLORIDE – FeCl2
    Hazardous - Yes
    Caution! May cause irritation.
    May be harmful if swallowed.

    FERROUS SULFATE – FeSO4
    Hazardous - Yes
WARNING! Harmful if swallowed or inhaled. Causes irritation to skin, eyes and respiratory tract. Affects the liver.

    SODIUM HYPOCHLORITE - NaClO Hazardous
    Hazardous - Yes
WARNING! Harmful if swallowed or inhaled. Causes irritation to eyes and respiratory tract. Causes substantial but temporary eye injury.

    CALCIUM NITRATE - Ca(NO3)2 4H2O
    Hazardous - Yes
Danger! Strong oxidizer. Contact with other material may cause fire. Causes irritation to skin, eyes and respiratory tract. Harmful if swallowed or inhaled.

    CHLORINE – Cl2 Hazardous - Yes
WARNING! HIGHLY TOXIC. CORROSIVE. May be fatal if inhaled. Strong oxidizer. Most combustibles will burn in chlorine as they do in oxygen.
